We built this custom camper top for a retired military M1101 lightweight tactical trailer—one of the most popular surplus platforms for overland travel and expedition use. The goal was straightforward: add secure, functional, weather-resistant storage without compromising the trailer’s durability or off-road capability.

The topper is constructed entirely from aluminum for strength without unnecessary weight. Awning-style doors on both sides and the rear create a full clamshell opening, making the interior easy to access from any direction. Each door is supported by gas shocks to hold it open and secured with lockable latches when closed.

Inside, we integrated overhead compartments for solar panel storage to keep them protected and out of the way during travel. A Milwaukee Packout mounting plate on the front interior wall allows modular tool and accessory organization. Up top, 1″ square exterior cross tubes are set up to accept common Yakima and Thule accessories—canoe and kayak mounts, bike racks, and more. We also added a custom 2″ trailer hitch receiver for additional receiver-mounted gear like bike racks, cargo trays, or grills. The result is a clean, modular system built around practical use in the field.
